April 2013 GlossyBox

The April Glossy Box box is finally here… but first, how did I get on with the contents of my March box?

Inside my box was:

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream – Fragrance Free: Although this is a really nice product and good for lips, cuticles and eyebrows, I’m not sure I could justify the price and I quite missed the distinctive smell of the fragranced version. To be honest I probably wouldn’t buy this but it’s a great all purpose product for the handbag cosmetics bag.

L’Occitane Imortelle Precious Cream: This rich moisturiser smells amazing – kind of like a spring garden just after rain. I found it great for dealing with stressed skin while traveling.

Jelly Pong Pong Lip Blush: I really liked the intense red colour of this lip stick. It wears well and leaves a decent stain after the top layer has worn off. It’s probably not as moisturising as it’s claiming to be and like with most long-wearing lip colours, I found that it dried my lips.

Nails Inc in Bruton Street: I didn’t get to try this because my box arrived just after I had had a Shellac manicure but it’s a nice colour so I’m hoping to use it soon.

Tresemme Salon Finish Extra Hold Hairspray: Surprisingly this was the absolute winner of the box and I ended up vastly preferring this budget product to the super expensive Wella equivalent I recently bought. It’s light wearing but long-lasting and holds hair in place without looking gluey. It also smells great. Will definitely be buying this.

The April Box

April 2

This month’s box had a vintage theme, with the gorgeous floral box designed by model Pearl Lowe. While I love the idea of this particular theme, I’m not completely sure how the contents of my box tied back to it. Inside my box was:

Sunsense Daily Face SPF: A tinted factor 50 facial sunscreen supposedly suitable for all skin types.

Nip + Fab Dry Skin Fix Body Butter in Mango: Yet another body butter. This one apparently contains something called AquaxylTM, which improves the skin’s water reserves.

Sleek Makeup Blush in Suede: This is a brownish shade, which is nice for doing nude make-up and a good handbag size, especially since it comes with a mirror.

Yves Rocher So Elixir Purple Eau de Parfum: First impression is that this is a strong floral scent, probably too heavy for day time wear.

Essie Nail Lacquer in Canyon Coral: Love this feisty, bright coral shade from the SS13 range. Perfect for the transition from winter into spring.

March 2013 GlossyBox

My March box has just arrived but before we get to that, what were the contents of the February Valentines box like?

Inside my box was:
Sassoon Professional Illuminating Restore: This coloured hair hair mask was awesome. Not only did it make my hair really soft, for a few days after I used it several people commented that my hair colour looked very vibrant, even though I hadn’t dyed my hair for about a month and was due a touch up. I would buy this.

Mica Bella Mineral Eye Shadow in Intelligence: This powdered eye shadow is easy to apply and long wearing. It’s got a nice shimmer to it but not too much to wear during the day. The bronzy-brown shade I got really suits me, so I have been wearing it a lot.

Miners Cosmetics Lip Colour in Dreamer: In all honestly this is a cheap crappy lipstick. The colour I got was a frosted pink that should have stayed in 1982. I managed to put it on once and had to wipe it off because it was so disgusting. The only reason it’s not in the bin is because it’s in the dress-up box.

Anatomicals You Need a Blooming Shower!: When they say this shower gel is rose scented they are not kidding. It smells like you’ve fallen face first into a rose bush. If you absolutely love roses, you will love this. Otherwise you might find it a little bit cloying.

MeMeMe Cosmetics FatCat Lengthening Mascara: I have absolutely zero eyelashes. When the gene pool was handing out eyelashes, I just kept rejoining the boob queue. For that reason I have tried a million mascaras in the hope that I will find a magic one that is going to make me look like there is something happening around my eyes. This… is not that mascara. It’s fine but really nothing special. You might as well just buy Maybelline or Rimmel.

A hit and miss box.

But now for the March box…

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream – Fragrance Free: I love Eight Hour Cream and this is a great handbag size. Slightly disappointed by the fact that it’s fragrance free because I love the distinctive smell.

L’Occitane Imortelle Precious Cream: Making all manner of age reversal claims. I shall be applying it to my great big frown line then.

Jelly Pong Pong Lip Blush: I can’t find the name of the shade I got but it’s a fab pinky red. Looks like exactly what I’d wear so I’m looking forward to seeing how long wearing it is.

Nails Inc in Bruton Street: This is a nice nude pink nail varnish. Hoping I will actually get to try it because I’ve just had a Shellac manicure.

Tresemme Salon Finish Extra Hold Hairspray: With the amount of hairspray this house goes through, you can never have enough.

It also came with a cute little book of travel tips for cities around the world. Unfortunately none for Budapest though, which is where Jen and I are heading this weekend.

February 2013 GlossyBox

While I initially though last month’s box looked a bit meh on the surface, it has turned out to be one of the most useful and usable boxes I have had so far. I got:

Premae Skincare Balance Rescue Face Tonique: This is a very refreshing toner, which is gentle on the skin and smells fab. Really enjoyed using it and might very well loo into other products in the range.

Jason Lips Bee Healthier: I love the minty smell of this lip balm and it provides good moisturisation… but it’s no Carmex. The most effective thing you can put on your lips is still Bepanthen.

Sanctuary Spa Active Reverse Thermal Transformation Mask: This mask is supposed to work over 30 days so it’s hard to really judge its effectiveness with a single use sample. I have to admit that putting this serum and warming mask combo on together and relaxing for 15 minutes was lovely and immediately afterwards my skin did feel firmer to the touch. I can’t judge it on its claim to improve skin “creping” though because at thirty-two, I have none.

Monu Renu Flash Mask:  I tried out this mask, which is supposed to be for mature skin. It did make my skin feel smoother and firmer, but like with the Sanctuary Spa mask I’m probably not quite the target audience. Stay out of the sun kids… and then you won’t need loads of anti-aging masks.

Vichy Normaderm 3in1 Cleanser: This is a cleanser, mask and scrub in one, but I only got as far as using it as a cleanser/scrub. Despite being scrubby it was gentle enough to use everyday and made my skin feel really clean and soft. Lovely.

Great box.

The February box has a Valentines theme and came in a special pink box:

Inside my box was:
Sassoon Professional Illuminating Restore: A hair mask for coloured hair.

Mica Bella Mineral Eye Shadow in Intelligence: Definitely a good everyday colour for me since I have blue eyes and fair skin and it’s sort of bronzey

Miners Cosmetics Lip Colour in Dreamer: I might be able to get around the cheapness of this product if the shade was better. Who still wears frosted pink lipstick. It’s not 1982!

Anatomicals You Need a Blooming Shower!: Rose scented shower gel. Will definitely use this and nice to get a full sized one.

MeMeMe Cosmetics FatCat Lengthening Mascara: You can never have enough mascara

And a bonus lolly. Tune in next month for the reviews!

January 2013 GlossyBox

Last month’s GlossyBox was pretty impressive and I think I was particularly lucky with what I got, more than many it seems. So here’s the review:

Rituals Magic Touch: This is a nice body cream. Good for taking on your travels when you have liquid restrictions. I wasn’t totally sold on the scent though.

Milk_Shake Conditioning Whipped Cream: Once I figured out how much of this to use (the instructions were woefully inadequate) I founds this leave in conditioner/treatment really lovely. My hair was shiny and smooth after using it – even after I forgot my shampoo on a work trip and had to wash my hair with shower gel!

Sleek Make-up i-Divine True: This eyeshadow pallet has great colours and is well packaged for a handbag make-up staple. Unfortunately it doesn’t apply well with the applicator included and it just made me wish my Urban Decay pallet was smaller.

Anatomicals Strawberry Milkshake Lipgloss: I haven’t yet found an opportunity to wear this shade of lipgloss because I’m not twelve.

GlossyBox Kryolan Blusher: Nice shade, applies well. No complaints.

Seche Nail Lacquer: I was surprised at the miniscule brush that came with my “chocolat” nail varnish. Made it surprisingly difficult to apply, especially to toenails. Probably wouldn’t buy this brand because of that.

Dr Jart BB Cream: This one was less shiny than the other one I got previously, which makes it better. It doesn’t have enough coverage for me personally to replace foundation though.

In this month’s “Detox” themed box I have:

Premae Skincare Balance Rescue Face Tonique: Smells nice and I’m a big fan of natural ingredients. This has lemongrass, sandalwood and rose water in it so hopefully it will be gentle on skin.

Jason Lips Bee Healthier: Not sure I expected a cheapie lip balm in a GlossyBox but I go through a lot of lip balm so I’ll definitely use it.

Sanctuary Spa Active Reverse Thermal Transformation Mask: Giving a one use sample of something referred to as a “30 Day Thermal Transformation” means that it will be challenging to know if it lives up to its promise.

Monu Renu Flash Mask:  Apparently for “mature skin”. I’m thirty-two! *Weeps*

Vichy Normaderm 3in1 Cleanser: This is a cleanser, mask and scrub in one, depending on how you choose to use it. Yay for multitasking.

There was also the added bonus of a GlossyBox sleep mask.

Definitely lots of useful products in this one but I think they might have overdone the masks slightly. Who needs three facemasks in one box?

December GlossyBox

Christmas comes but once a year and so does the December GlossyBox in its amazing shiny silver packaging… oooh… but before the big reveal. Let’s talk about last month’s products.

I got:

Wei Beauty Jujube Age Control Serum: It was a perfectly passable serum and I got through the whole tube in about two weeks. It make my skin nice and soft but I can claim that it radically rejuvenated my skin. It was a tiny sample though so it was probably too short a period of time to get that kind of result.

Alison Claire Natural Beauty Mango Body Butter: This is a perfectly decent body butter but the small is nauseating. I really like fruity skin products but this smelled like a mango that had been in the fruit bowl for three days too long. Grim.

Nails Inc Kensington Caviar: I have to admit that I didn’t try this polish at all since it was bright pink and I prefer darker, more muted colours in winter. I’ll get it out in summer and let you know.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant: Probably the best product of the bunch. It’s unusual as it comes in powder form in a little shaker than you mix with a few drops of water and apply to your damp face after cleansing and scrub for a minute. It definitely made my skin soft and smooth and it’s both gentle and effective.

As you can see December was a bumper month as everyone got a bonus product. I got an additional bonus product on top of this to make up for the fact that they had sent me Olay Regenerist 3-Point Treatment Cream two months in a row. So these are my eight products:

Rituals Magic Touch: A soft whipped body cream, cherry blossom and rice milk scent.

Seche Nail Lacquer: In “chocolat” – finally a proper winter shade!

Milk_Shake Conditioning Whipped Cream: This is a kind of leave in conditioning treatment. I’ve always been a bit suspect of leave-in conditioner but I will happily try anything once. Plus it’s great to travel with as it means I don’t need conditioner and hair oil.

Sleek Make-up i-Divine True: I absolutely love this eyeshadow pallet. It has a wide range of brights and neutrals and it’s small and compact making it perfect for handbag make-up.

Anatomicals Strawberry Milkshake Lipgloss Tube: I’m very much more a lipstick than lipgloss girl and this is mega pink and sticky…

GlossyBox Kryolan Blusher:  In Glossy Pink – I like Kryolan and this looks like a good subtle shade.

Dr Jart BB Cream: This is a slightly different variant from the one I got in October but since I loved that, I can’t complain.

Best box yet by miles!

November GlossyBox

I received my November GlossyBox last week, which means that it’s time to review the contents of last month’s box.

Anatomicals Don’t just clean it woman, scrub it body scrub – this scrub smells amazing but it’s not all that “scrubby” and I didn’t have that OMG is this really my skin feeling after I used it. I think I’ll stick with Soap and Glory.

Olay Regenerist 3-Point Treatment Cream Fragrance Free – I got through the whole tube of this but it was nothing special. Just your average bog standard moisturiser.

Skinetica Anti-Blemish – While no blemish busting miracles were achieved, this really awful smelling liquid does reduce the inflammation of large spots overnight and I will definitely continue to use it for breakouts.

Yves Rocher France Moisturising Lipstick COLEURS NATURE: Mauve – The texture of this lipstick is absolutely stunning. It glides on and seems impossibly creamy. The colour I got was very dark though and I am very fair so I haven’t worn it as much as I would have if it was just a little bit more suited to my skin tone.

Dr. Jart Premium BB Cream – This is awesome for when you want light coverage without putting on a full face of make-up or just need a touch-up on the go. It’s become one of my handbag make-up staples.

In this month’s box I have:

Wei Beauty Jujube Age Control Serum: Apparently I should be expecting renewal, revitalisation, suppleness and elasticity. At 32 with few signs of aging, we’ll see…

Alison Claire Natural Beauty Mango Body Butter: It’s gone into the travel bag since the sample is a great shape and size. Will have to go far to beat my Body Shop staples.

Nails Inc Kensington Caviar: There were three colours of this nail polish that could possibly have ended up in your box. I got Notting Hill Gate AKA the lurid pink one. It’s really not a winter colour and I’m quite sad that I didn’t get Porchester Square.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant: Hmm… a rice-based powder that gently exfoliates skin.. sounds interesting

Olay Regenerist 3-Point Treatment Cream Fragrance Free: Yes… again… two months in a row! I’d have a rant but I’ve had an email from Glossy saying they’ll send an extra product in my December box to make up for it. Better be something good.

Tune in next month for reviews!

Happy Halloween!

After the debacle with our tickets for Halloween weekend, we couldn’t face staying home. Very fortunately, my lovely friend, Tracy, was having a house party and was kind enough to allow last minute guests. It also meant that it was time for last minute costumes.

I think Jen and I did quite well.  Here’s Jen as an extra from The Walking Dead. I might have had just a little too much fun teasing her hair though.

I decided to put my best make-up skills to the test and come as a tattoo.

My interpretation

Fortunately we managed to get Karen and Paul along for the ride…

Pink punk!

Need anything measured, luv?

And a good time was had by all. Possibly too good a time. Jen and I managed to drink more than enough gin for five people.

I spent Sunday remembering why I don’t really drink anymore. Urgh… Happy Halloween, kids!

October GlossyBox

So the October GlossyBox has arrived… and kids, it’s a good one. I have to admit that I kind of haven’t really tried much from the September box. Largely because it was a bit, meh.

From what I did try:

The Rodial Snake Serum didn’t do anything noticeable. Maybe you need to put it on everyday but with just two little sachets, who knows?

The Lady Gaga perfume was divine and I have been gently hinting to everyone I know that I might like it for my birthday…

The absolute star of the box though was the Maghrabian Hair Oil. It took me a while to find out how to use it but once I discovered that you put in on before you blow dry your hair I fell in love. It has made a genuine difference to the condition of my hair, which is smoother and silkier than ever before.  Girding my loins for when it’s finished and I have to shell out £24 to buy a full sized bottle!

You can see the full contents of the box here.

This month I got:

Anatomicals Don’t just clean it woman, scrub it body scrub – this is a bit of a cheapie product but I was going to buy some body scrub so this saves me having to do that. Love a good scrub.

Olay Regenerist 3-Point Treatment Cream Fragrance Free – I already have a sample of this from Beauty Recommended that I haven’t tried yet but more moisturiser is always handy for one’s travel bag.

Skinetica Anti-Blemish – Supposed to sort out zits quickly. Proof will be in the pudding for this one, I think.

Yves Rocher France Moisturising Lipstick COLEURS NATURE: Mauve – This lipstick looks lush and I do like the colour. It’s perfect for autumn. When I did look at the other colour that was an option, I did kind of wish I got the other one.

Dr. Jart Premium BB Cream – I’ve been umming and ahing about buying a BB cream for a while and balking at the idea of spending over a tenner on something that might not work, so I’m really keen to give this a go. Might become a travelling make-up bag staple!

If anyone wants to sign up for Glossy Box you can do so here. The October box is still available for order.

September GlossyBox

Some of you will remember that I decided to try out a subscription to GlossyBox starting last month. You can check out what was in last month’s box here.

The contents varied in quality. I quite liked the Impress manicure, even though mine was the colour of fresh poo. I’d probably consider buying it for a special occasion if I was too broke/busy to get a manicure. The facial cleansing oil is also quite nice but the star out of the whole box is the GlossyBox special edition Kryolan lipstick that I am currently wearing every day.

On the not so good side, the “whitening” nail polish turned my nails a kind of sickly pink colour, like when they show you the hand of someone who’s been poisoned on CSI. The Lipcote stung so much when I put it on that I briefly thought I might pass out. Not sure what’s in there but I don’t think it’s good. The eye shadow reminded me a bit of something I got in a Tinkerbell gift set when I was seven. Bad, bad, bad quality.

In this month’s box I’ve got:

A sample of Lady Gaga – Fame fragrance. I’m not really one for celebrity fragrances but I have to admit that this one smells pretty good. Apparently it contains ‘tears of Belladonna, crushed heart of tiger orchidea, with a black veil of incense, pulverised apricot and the combinative essence of saffron and honey drops.” If you say so, love.

A sachet of Rodial – 5 Minute Facial. I love a quick home face mask. Was half tempted to try this at lunch time at work but then when I thought about spending the afternoon make-up free I changed my mind. Apparently it’s going to give me a youthful glow.

Also from Rodial a sachet of Snake Serum. Apparently this stuff is going to magically erase my expression lines. Is that a good thing? I really hope it doesn’t have actual snake in it…

Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream. At 7ml, it’s a pretty good sample size. Smells nice and has 99% natural ingredients. It’ll definitely go into my travel toiletries bag.

Vichy Idealia Day Cream. With all the illuminating apparently coming from these products, I’m going to glow in the dark.

Maghrabian Hair Oil. Instructions on the product and the whole website are in Spanish. I’m not quite sure when I’m supposed to apply this stuff. If anyone can read Spanish, please help. Smells nice though.

If anyone would like to try out a box of their own, you can do it here. I’ll be back next month to report back on how the illumination is going.

My latest obsession: Glossybox!

Since I was a child, I’ve loved getting things in the post. Possibly because both my grandmothers were particularly fond of sending large birthday parcels, wrapped in brown paper with sealing wax at our birthdays. The collection and unwrapping process was almost as much of an event as actually playing with the toy inside it.

So when I discovered Glossybox I had absolutely no hope of resisting. What the lovely people at Glossybox do is send you a monthly box with five samples of premium beauty products for you to try out. And then if you like them, you can buy them on the Glossybox site with a bit of a discount. All this delightful little treat costs is £10 per month!

I was initially slightly sceptical but I thought I’d give it a go and see what arrived in post. My first exquisitely packaged box arrived last week.  Apparently it’s the International Superstar box. Inside it I got:

  • Some Japanese deep cleansing skin oil
  • A full eye shadow palette with eleven different colours from Spain
  • An American nail set
  • Some special German nail polish that makes the whites of your nails whiter
  • A lipstick sealer that makes your lip colour last longer
  • Glossybox’s own lipstick shade in a lovely subtle pink

My level of excitement is probably somewhat excessive but having had a look at the Glossy Blog and seeing all the amazing things that have popped up in boxes over the past year that they’ve been doing them, I can’t wait for more.

If anyone else wants to get in on the excitement you can sign up here. Let me know what you get!

30 Day Meme: Day 19 – A talent of yours

I do really good make-up, on myself and other people… so here are a few of my make-up tips:

  • Don’t be afraid of colour when it comes to eye shadow. You’ll be surprised how much you can put on before you start to look like a clown.
  • Pink blusher is always better than brown or orange. This is not the 90’s and you’re not a wag.
  • Olive green eyeliner is great for when you don’t want the harshness of black and it really makes blue and green eyes pop.
  • Get some Urban Decay eye shadow primer and never let it out of your sight. If you put that on before your eye shadow it will not shift until you wash it off. Truth.
  • Take time to match your base really well with your skin. Try it on your jawline not your hand. Nothing looks worse than a face that’s not the same colour as the rest of you.
  • For eyeshadow a light colour on the lid with a darker colour in the crease (preferably different tones of the same colour) and a little highlighter on the brow line makes your eyes look huge. Fact.
  • Sparkly eye shadow is only for night. Seriously. Put it away.
  • Brown make-up is booooring and you are not.
  • Cheap make-up is crap. It really is. Trust me. Spend a little more and it will be totally worth it.
  • Do lips or eyes… not both… unless you’re planning to try and make money from your feminine wiles

If anyone wants me to do their make-up, come on over. I’m always willing!
