Our Chemical Baby and why The Mighty Boosh owes Smashing Pumpkins

Breaking news… Mindless Self Indulgence announced by MySpace bulletin this morning that their bassist, Lyn-Z, is pregnant. Why is this exciting to anyone except me and a bunch of other MSI fans? Well Lyn-Z is the wife of Gerard Way, the frontman of My Chemical Romance. Yup… we’re getting a Waylet in the late Spring (Northern Hemisphere). How completely awesome! Congrats to Gee and Lyn-Z.

Gerard Way and Lyn-Z

Now onto the concept of imitation as the sincerest form of flattery. Over the weekend I was watching Kerrang. As I do… a lot. They were having a countdown of the top 50 videos of the 90’s. Of course one of these was the video for Tonight Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins. I adore the song and I remembered the overall concept of the video from when it was in the charts… but that was about 14 years ago and I had forgotten a lot of the detail. Watching the video again now, I was alarmed. I think I might have discovered where The Mighty Boosh got their inspiration from.

Picture this many years in the past… Noel Fielding and Julian Barrett, possibly chemically intoxicated, watching music videos. Tonight Tonight comes on and they turn to each other and go, “hold on a minute…”

Want to know what I’m on about? First watch the Tonight Tonight video.

Then watch this clip of the Moon singing from The Mighty Boosh. Look familiar?

Now look at this clip of Black Frost from the Tundra episode. He looks almost identical to the aliens from the video.

And this whole pastiche of reality mixed in with bad animation? Noel, Julian… does Billy Corgan know about this?

P.S. Don’t forget to vote for your favourite mo!
