Bedtime… now by daddy

Age: 1 year 3 weeks
I like: banging on things, cake, touching faces, boobs

Up until a couple of weeks ago I was the only person who had ever put Little O to bed at night. This is because his preferred way of going to sleep is to be breastfed until he dozes off, eventually lets go of my nipple and lets me put him down in his cot. Well in theory anyway. Read more…

12 month update

Age: 12 1/3 months
I like: Climbing the stairs, boobs, anything spicy, ryvitas, stickle brick wheels

I have decided to stop calling my Little O updates “The baby chronicles”. As he has now survived the first year of his life, I don’t think he officially qualifies as a baby anymore. I am glad I manage to update once a week for the first year of his life because the early weeks and months are already fading somewhat. My phone keeps showing me pictures from a year ago “today” and half of them are completely unfamiliar to me. I hope those posts and future ones will help me keep my memories of his early life fresh. So let’s see how he’s doing at one year old.

The baby chronicles #52: Reflecting on the last year

Age: One year old
I like: Sticklebricks, splashing in my birthday suit, watermelon, boobs

A year ago today the O family had been home from hospital for one day.  Little O was a grand total of three days old and I was still in a fog of hormones, adrenaline and general confusion. I feel like that person was a completely different person to who I am now. Read more…

The baby chronicles #51: Little O’s first birthday party

Age: Virtually one
I like: Balls, my 360° sippy cup, boobs, shouting
I suppose there is an argument to say that first birthday parties are a bit pointless because the guest of honour has no idea it’s their birthday but I feel like being en entire year old is something that needs to be marked with an event. And even if Little O isn’t bothered by the fact that it’s his birthday, Mr O and I deserve a celebration of surviving our first year as parents and me especially of surviving labour.

The baby chronicles #50: Normal service resumes

Age: 11 ¾ months
I like: Sag paneer, dry leaves, sticking out my tongue, boobs, licking people, flirting with sales assistants

After last week’s trip to the emergency room, I am glad to say that Little O is back to his usual self and once again bursting with energy and cheeky grins. Read more…

The baby chronicles #49: A turbulent week

Age: 11 1/2 months
I like: My bike, boobs, big sloppy kisses, waving – when I feel like it, dogs, my paddling pool

After the terrible cold of the fortnight or so ago, we really thought Little O was on the mend. He was coughing occasionally but had perked up loads and was really enjoying the warmer weather. I bought him a cheap paddling pool, which Mr O filled with water and some plastic balls and it became his new favourite thing almost immediately. We even got to the point where he started to get excited as soon as we opened the back door. Read more…

The baby chronicles #48: 11 month update

Age: 11 1/4 months
I like: Stealing other people’s food, olives, bubbles, playing outside, boobs

We officially have less than one month to go before Little O is a whole year old. It’s crazy because in some ways it feels like I had him yesterday and in other ways I can’t remember a time when he wasn’t here… but let’s see how he’s getting on at 11 months. Read more…

The baby chronicles #47: Friends!

Age: 11 months
I like: Lentils, boobs, my ride-on motorbike, pepperoni

Over the weekend, Little O and I had a play date with M and Little M. M is one of those friends I met in a very random, modern way. We both joined the June 2016 BabyCentre forum and then followed each other on Instagram. Through that we realised that we live quite close to each other and that M works in the town I live in. We also realised that Little O and Little M were born on the same day. I invited M and Little M to the protest I helped organise earlier this year, they came along, we finally met in person and we’ve been messaging and occasionally meeting up since. Read more…

The baby chronicles #46: The cold of doom

Age: 10 ¾ months
I like: Trying to climb laundry airers, digging up the flowers daddy planted, boobs

For about a week Little O had a snotty nose. We weren’t too worried about it because little humans forever have snotty noses. It’s all part of the immune system building process and most of the time they don’t even notice. Read more…

The baby chronicles #45: Party time

Age: 10 ½ months
I like: Nanny’s shepherd’s pie, eating on the move, taking apart my food for inspection, goat curry, kissing mummy on her belly, digging in the dirt, boobs

Over the last two weekends Little O has been to two birthday parties, which seems to me to be quite an intense social life for a less than one year old. Read more…

The baby chronicles #44: 10 month update

Age: 10 1/4 months
I like: Clambering, shouting, boobs (especially nipples… joy), taking apart my food for inspection, my nubbly balls (pictured below)

Little O is now a whole 10 months old and very much on the downhill run to being a year old… eep! So here’s how things are going. Read more…

The baby chronicles #43: Away for the weekend

Age: 10 months
I like: Biting, blueberry yoghurt, unpacking things, boobs, chattering

Last weekend was Easter weekend so both Friday and Monday were bank holidays and we all got a nice long weekend. We decided to take advantage of the extended bit of time off and the whole O clan went away to Centre Parcs at Elveden Forest. Basically you stay in a cute little cottage in a forest where there are no cars, only bikes and partake in fun indoor and outdoor activities (if you want to). This was the third time we’ve been as a family since I have known Mr O but the first time with Little O. Read more…

The baby chronicles #42: A little bit of sun

Age: 9 2/3 months
I like: Mango, waving my spoon around, my plastic bucket, boobs, Gouda

One of the main reasons Mr O and I decided to move out of London and into Essex was the potential to have a garden. It might seem a bit odd that a garden was a priority considering that the UK isn’t exactly known for its sunny weather but we both have very fond memories of playing in the garden as children and wanted the same for Little O. The baby chronicles #41: Juggling

Age: 9 1/2 months
I like: Trying to climb the stairs, big plastic bottles, boobs, blueberry mush

I have been back at work for four weeks now and I am realising that more than anything else being a full time working mum is a juggling act. There are lots of balls that need to stay in the air, all of them important and trying to figure out what to do and when is the real challenge. Read more…

The baby chronicles #40: My first Mothers’ Day

Weeks old: 40
I like: Clambering on things, grass, my singing book, boobs
Mummy is learning: To watch me carefully if I am playing near the stairs

Unlike everywhere else in the world, in the UK Mothers’ Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of March. Apparently “Mothering Sunday” is related to Easter, which is why it’s in March. The rest of the world has adopted the USA’s day of celebration in May, which was set up after mothers’ groups campaigned following the Civil War. So now you know. Read more…

The baby chronicles #39: 9 month update

Weeks old: 39
I like: Biting everyone, boobs, the fireplace, my activity table
Mummy is learning: That if she can just get me to taste my food, I might have some more

This week Little O is officially 9 months old and on Tuesday he had been out in the world 274 days, which is how long he was inside my body. For some reason this seems like a major milestone. In many ways I felt like I was pregnant for an eternity but now I have been a mother longer than I was pregnant.

The baby chronicles #38: First week back at work

Weeks old: 38
I like: Water (but only out of someone else’s cup), standing up, biting mummy, boobs – especially if I get to put the boob in my mouth myself, dancing to Shake Your Booty
Mummy is learning: That I am going to constantly injure myself for the next 5 years…

I have survived my first week back at work and it was okay. These are some things that happened. Read more…

The baby chronicles #37: Last week of maternity leave

Weeks old: 37
I like: Standing up in the bath, standing up in my cot, pinching mummy, boobs, slides
Mummy is learning: That even if I sleep in my cot, she can’t sleep because she is programmed to listen for me waking up

This week was my last week of maternity leave before I go back to work full time… on Monday. As I have mentioned several times in this blog, I have mixed feelings about returning to work but ultimately I know it is the right thing for me and for my little family. I love and enjoy my job and it pays me well enough to enable Mr O to work part time and share daily care of Little O with Mrs O Senior. Of course, I have become very accustomed to being Little O’s number one person and it is hard to imagine not spending the majority of most days with him or to manage my fear that I will become a secondary person in his life. The baby chronicles #36:On the move

Weeks old: 36
I like: Everything I am not supposed to touch – especially wires, boobs, biting people, bubbles
Mummy is learning: To find the balance between letting me explore and stopping me from injuring myself

In the last week Little O has become fully independently mobile. While he’s been able to move around by himself up to a point for a while, in this last week he’s taken it to a new level. Read more…

The baby chronicles #35: 8 month update

Weeks old: 35
I like: escaping fast, shouting, “dadadada” at the top of my lungs, farting, boobs
Mummy is learning: that dressing an 8 month old is like trying to put an Octopus in a string bag

Unbelievably Little O is now 8 months old (didn’t I just have him last week?) so I reckon it’s time for a bit of an update.  Read more…
