It has been some time since I took Little O to the cinema. A few months ago I look him to see a film (I forget which) and they played a Lion King trailer. It scared the absolute bejesus out of him. Since then we’ve gotten as far as purchasing tickets and getting to the entrance of the theatre and then he’s refused point blank to go in. Recently I discovered that our local cinema does cheap family tickets early on weekend mornings so we decided to give it another go and at least not spend a fortune if he refused again. I picked A A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon because it is aimed at the littlest of humans and hopefully devoid of any scary bits. And it was a winner
The second Shaun the Sheep film has a pretty simple plot. A young alien crash lands on earth and befriends, Shaun while looking for its space ship. Meanwhile the farmer decides to build a theme park to cash in on the alien hype and a sinister government agency has their own plans to track down anything not native to Earth.
I had pretty low expectations for this but I was very pleasantly surprised. Lu-La, the alien is adorable, as is its relationship with Shaun. The dog is a brilliant straight-man/antagonist but he proves that he has a heart under his desperation to stick to the rules and support the farmer no matter how mad his ideas are.
There are loads of brilliant little Easter Eggs scattered around the place that sci-fi fans will love and to help keep adult viewers engaged. I liked the little Tardises (Tardi?) that kept popping up and Mr O loved the nods to The X-Files. There is one particular scene in a supermarket where Lu-La discovers sugar that still has me chuckling and that Little O keeps asking to watch on YouTube.
As kids’ films goes, this is one of the most fun (and blessedly shortest) I have seen in a long time and I much preferred it to the first Shaun the Sheep film. Highly recommended.
