The Wild Things are dead… long live abbiosbiston

You might have noticed things are looking a bit different over at this blog.

For a while now I have been thinking of changing the name. My blog is a stately six and a half years old and has evolved significantly since its evolution.

At the start calling it Where the Wild Things Are made perfect sense. My posts were all about wild nights out with my friends and my crazy online dating adventures. And there’s some real gold there, which is why I don’t want to get rid of any of it. If you have some time to poke around in my archives (that is not a euphemism, Eric) you might get a good laugh out of it.

These days my life is not that wild and my blog has become more lifestyle focused with posts about fashion, TV, food and of course movies (and possibly soon book reviews… would people be interested in that?). I’ve grown up and found a community and the name no longer reflects what I do here.

So with that in mind we will now be calling ourselves abbiosbiston because essentially this blog is an eclectic mix of tastes and experiences. We will be found at abbiosbiston.com.

I am experimenting with the look of the blog to match the change so things might be a teensy bit unstable for the next couple of weeks until I find exactly what I want.

In the meantime I am hoping to develop a logo and a WordPress icon to represent abbiosbiston that I could possibly also use on Twitter, etc. If anyone feels inclined to help with that (because I am crap) I would be very appreciative and reward you with actual appreciation because I have no money.

  1. But I never figured out where the wild things were…….

They were five years ago before I became a sort of grown up!

Wait, when did you grow up?? 🙂

        1. Abbi

It’s all relative. I am grown up relative to five years ago. You missed out on all the posts about stealing traffic cones and drinking rosé straight out of the bottle.

  2. good luck with this new endeavor. always nice to read your thoughts!

I’ll poke around in your archives!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though – sounds good! I dabble in graphic design but I’m not very good – but I would try and help do whatever you’d like : )

Aww thanks! I’d love to see what you can dream up. I’m essentially looking for a simple logo just made up of the “word” abbiosbiston plus an icon I can use for my gravatar and similar stuff probably using my initials (AO).

      1. theipc

OK – let me see if I can scare some options up over the next few days when I’m at home : )

        1. Abbi

          I love you 😍

My blog used to be “With A Friend Like Gary” which was a parody of “With A Friend Like Harry” (which is a french thriller I thought was awesome) but no one got the connection b/c no one saw the movie. And then I couldn’t find a theme I felt fit the theme of my blog; so I got frustrated and deleted it last year. And this is my new blog “The Critical Critic” I started last week that feels more congruent and in alignment with who I am – a movie lover who is often critical of mediocre, recycled and predictable films.

I actually had my logo (which looks like an “E” but is actually two C’s on top of each other for Critical Critic) done by a graphic designer on Fiverr. He did my banner, as well. You can probably get a pretty nice logo done for around $20-30. Just go on the Fiverr site and look up logo designers and start looking at different artists work, see their prices and turnaround times, etc. Look at their reviews, too, to make sure people are saying positive things.

This is actually the second iteration of my blog. There was actually one that started in 2007 on msn spaces (say what?) before blogging was even like a thing… before I was even abbiosbiston (the woman… the legend). I named it on a whim and it was fine till about 2 years ago but it’s been bugging me for way too long now and making me feel limited. Its a huge part of my life and I want it to be the best it can be.

Your new blog sounds great and I will definitely be checking it out.

Thanks for the suggestion re logos. I’ve had a couple of offers from friends with skillz so I am going to see how that goes for now.

  11. I’ve grown up a lot (and I mean a lot) since I was first VampirePlacebo, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to let it go, no matter how juvenile it sounds. It’s been my tag since internet at home was in its infancy, changing it now would kinda be like changing my real name, hehe.

    1. Abbi

That totally makes sense. I have actually changed my real name, which is probably part of it. I use abbiosbiston everywhere else so it’s lining it all up.

      1. Osbiston is kinda weird, hehe. Never heard anything like it before. And that’s a good thing. Is it pronounced like it’s written?

        1. Abbi

If you Google me I am literally the only me there is and I love that. It’s pronounced pretty much exactly as its spelled although people really seem to struggle and for some reason they often drop the first S. And when I applied for British citizenship I ended up with an extra I, which was a bitch to get fixed. According to my husband it’s an old English name of Viking origin.

          1. Awesome!!

I, on the flip side, have a disgustingly common last name, which I share with a disgusting singer, Celine Dion. And people never relent with the Celine jokes, and invariably find themselves hilarious. My response is always the same, a cocked eyebrow and a “really..??” look on my face. People don’t seem to get that everyone and their grandmother (especially their grandmothers) has made this joke to me. Wasn’t funny the first time, isn’t funny the 5000th. I was so happy when I got engaged, I thought I would finally be free of that. But no, we’re extra liberated here in Canada, and we don’t do that. So I’m stuck with it…

            1. Abbi

I have a colleague named Celine who has a very heavy French accent and I often hear her explaining to people on the phone that her name is Celine… like Celine Dion so maybe it has a few benefits?

              1. Zero benefits, only annoyance! hehehe

  12. This is exciting! Can’t wait to see what surprises you’ve got hidden up your sleeve/cleavage. Sorry, got a bit distracted there!

    1. Abbi

Hahahahaha! The only surprise in my cleavage is usually crumbs.

  13. Pretty good! I had noticed the changes to the look and I’m glad you’re giving your site a new identity. Looks and sounds great! I actually made the inverse change a few years ago. The blog was named after me and then I settled on “Committed to Celluloid”, which is ironic, because I haven’t really been committed to it 😦 Wish I could help you out with the logo thing but I suck at design, and can’t even recommend the guy who helped me because he’s disappeared from the blogosphere.

    1. Abbi

It totally makes sense if you are focused on one thing to have a name that reflects that. For me I would feel constrained since I do so many bits of different things. I have had a few offers of logo help so don’t worry about it at all. Just your support is as always welcome and appreciated! XX

  14. I like your new name and can already sense so much of maturity in it (though I no way mean to say your old posts were any less mature!!) I think personal blog grows and evolves with you it’s good to bring in meaningful changes to a blog too! Looking forward to your new posts! All the best! 🙂

Thank-you! I think blogging has changed so much from when I started that to stay the same is just a recipe for stagnation. This feels like a positive step forward.

  15. This sounds great, looking forward to reading more of your posts going forward 🙂

  16. I noticed, because I kept trying to comment and couldn’t load posts. Good now, and I must catch up! I like the new look.

  17. Theo

That’s a great step! Cheers to the future! 🙂

    1. abbiosbiston

      Thanks, Theo!

  18. Very cool lady! I have to come through here and raid your posts, I have been away and busy for some time and need to play catch up in places. I do love this though, looking great and fancy and all that!

I know what you mean on the blog names though :/

Also, book reviews? YOU KNOW I WANT THEM!!!!!!

    1. abbiosbiston

Thank-youuuuuu! Book reviews will be coming soon although with far less frequency than films 🙂

      1. YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Understandable, but I will certainly be keeping my eyes peeled!!

  19. Love the new look, always love your amazing blog.

    1. abbiosbiston

      Thanks, Vinnie! X
