My top 10 Oscar predictions – how did I do?

The Oscars are over for another year and  I know the question on all of your lips is… how did I do on predictions for the 10 categories I actually cared about? (Spoiler: it’s not good).

So what do you think? Did the Academy got it right?

  1. MIB

    50% isn’t too bad! 😉

I’ve not seen any of the films on this year’s list so I can’t comment on them.

I did want Marion Cotillard to win Best Actress, but as she is not American she gets nothing. Glad “IDA” won Best Foreign Film but I personally preferred “Leviathan”.

    1. Abbi

Some of them were actually quite good this year. I think you might enjoy Birdman especially. Unfortunately I haven’t seen any of the Foreign films this year but I have added all of them to my list and Two Days, One Night is now on Amazon Prime so I am hoping to watch it soon.

      1. MIB

I enjoyed the other Iñárritu films I’ve seen (Amores Perros, Babel and Biutiful) so I am interested in seeing it although I can’t shake the fact that directors deliver their best work in their native countries, but I will give it a go.

I hope you enjoy Two Days and One Night – it’s a powerful and draining drama but Cotillard is phenomenal in it.

        1. Abbi

I haven’t seen Amores Perros or Biutiful but I really liked Babel and 21 Grams. He is definitely a gifted director.

          1. MIB

Amores Perros is another elliptical drama with a fractured narrative that comes together in the end while Biutiful is a straight up hard hitting drama. 🙂

  2. I really wanted Rosamund Pike to win Best Actress. She always flies under the radar and I think she really deserved the award. Mind you, I haven’t seen Julianne Moore’s performance, so like you, I can’t really comment.

    1. Abbi

I didn’t love Gone Girl but she really made it work. Hoping to see Still Alice soon so that I can form an opinion.

  3. theipc

I never watch any of these movies….

    1. Abbi

      Probably best.

  4. I haven’t seen a single one of the films nominated this year, so I’m not too sad I missed it. As time goes on, I get less interested in the Oscars, which is really just a bunch of rich people patting each other on the back. The awards I enjoy, and that I think are much more important, are the awards that are voted on by us, the audience. If I were an actress, I wouldn’t really care what executives thought of me, I’d just want the fans to be happy.

    1. Abbi

I don’t blame you. It’s just an arse-kissing festival of self-congratulation but since I actually saw most of the films this year I felt like making some predictions would be fun 🙂

  5. I didn’t even try to figure out how many I got right – I got more wrong this year than ever before! Couldn’t really be arsed. I’m sad Boyhood didn’t win but, like you, am glad American Sniper didn’t. 🙂

    1. Abbi

Normally I haven’t seen most of them so I don’t bother to make predictions but mostly the Academy is totally full of crap.

  6. I just predicted the big six categories. I went 5 for 6. Only one I missed was Best Actor. We definitely share the love for Boyhood. Hated that it was pushed aside but it makes sense. And it really frustrates me when I hear people call Boyhood gimmicky. What an incredibly off-based accusation. And I too would have loved to seen Budapest win cinematography. But you could almost say Birdman won it because of a gimmick (sense some are lobbing out that accusation).

    1. Abbi

Well done you! I found Boyhood absolutely mesmerising. I felt so in touch with the characters because it felt like I was watching them grow up in front of my eyes… and that’s because it was the same actors. If it was a gimmick it really, really worked.

  7. I loved Birdman, but I haven’t seen any of the others, so I’ll tell you good job!

    1. Abbi

There were some pretty good nominees this year. I would recommend Boyhood, Selma, Whiplash and Grand Budapest Hotel.

  8. So happy Boyhood (almost) didn’t win anything. As you know, I wasn’t a fan!

    1. Abbi

Hahahaha! I am a fan but I also really enjoyed Birdman so I think it was a worthy winner.

      1. Yes! So happy for Alejandro 🙂

  9. The Imitation Game was worthy winner but I also hoped that Whiplash would’ve win but I wasn’t too disappointed. For Nightcrawler the nomination was win enough, I think. And Birdman was also worthy. Especially in cinematography, that was unbelievable work, Lubezki is brilliant. Maybe even better than Deakins. But then again, I’m not a big fan of Anderson’s style. 🙂 I’m also happy American Sniper didn’t win. And sad for Boyhood.

    1. Abbi

I am a bit obsessed with Nightcrawler so I desperately wanted it to win something but that would ideally have been Best Actor. Anderson is definitely a bit of a Marmite director. I haven’t loved all his films but Grand Budapest Hotel was great.

      1. Gyllenhaal should’ve gotten nomination!

  10. Ewww award winners. However my work had a guess the Oscars contest. I won with 16 out of 20 or 21 and won a $20 gift card to Panera bread. Of course I based my decisions on what Hollywood Reporter and Variety said on their sites so that helped.

    1. Abbi

I’m not sure what Panera bread is but well done you! So much of the award winning is about the PR so basing your guesses on the media is a pretty good shout!

      1. It’s a trendy restaurant that serves a lot of sandwiches and soup.
