Although I am a bit more of a homebody these days, I am no stranger to a wild party, both as an attendee and as a host. In the last house share I lived in my housemates and I threw a “dirty pirate hooker” themed party that went until 9am and involved the noise police turning up twice.
Anyway I love a good party and I love a good movie party scene. These are some of my favourites.
Bilbo Baggins’ birthday party
Film: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Starring: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellan, Viggo Mortensen
Would I have wanted to be there?: For the fireworks alone
“Bilbo: Gandalf, my old friend, this will be a night to remember.”
Fan house party
Film: Almost Famous (2000)
Starring: Billy Crudup, Kate Hudson, Jason Lee
Would I have wanted to be there?: Your favourite rock star turns up at a high school house party? Obviously.
“William Miller: [on the phone with Dick, talking about Russell] Dick, I got him. He’s okay. He is on acid, though.
William Miller: I can’t really tell. How do you know when it’s kicked in?
[Cut to Russell standing on the roof, screaming “I am a golden god”]”
Film: It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
Starring: James Stewart Donna Reed
Would I have wanted to be there?: If I knew how to Charleston and could guarantee that I wasn’t going to end up in the pool, then yes.
“George Bailey: [gazing eyes with Mary] Well, well, well.
Freddie Othello: Now, to get back to my story, see?
[in a trance, Mary hands Othello her drink, and George and Mary start dancing]
Freddie Othello: Hey, this is MY dance!
George Bailey: Oh, why don’t you stop annoying people.
Freddie Othello: Well, I’m sorr- Hey!“
All the parties
The Great Gatsby (2013)
Starring: Leonardo Di Caprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan
Would I have wanted to be there?: Hell yeah! Gatsby throws the party that rocks the party
“Jordan Baker: Well, I don’t care. He gives large parties, and I like large parties – they’re so intimate. Small parties, there isn’t any privacy.“
Vito Corleone’s daughter’s wedding
Film: The Godfather (1972)
Starring: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan
Would I have wanted to be there?: Tough one. On the one hand it looks epic on the other hand I’d prefer to avoid the Mafia.
“Don Corleone: We have known each other many years, but this is the first time you’ve come to me for counsel or for help. I can’t remember the last time you invited me to your house for a cup of coffee, even though my wife is godmother to your only child. But let’s be frank here. You never wanted my friendship. And you feared to be in my debt.
Bonasera: I didn’t want to get into trouble.
Don Corleone: I understand. You found paradise in America. You had a good trade, you made a good living. The police protected you and there were courts of law. So you didn’t need a friend like me. Now you come and say “Don Corleone, give me justice.” But you don’t ask with respect. You don’t offer friendship. You don’t even think to call me “Godfather.” You come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married and you ask me to do murder – for money.“
The Jeffrey Party
Get Him to the Greek (2010)
Starring: Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Sean Combs
Would I have wanted to be there?: Erm… maybe… but I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere near the Jeffrey
“Aaron Green: I think I just got raped.
Aldous Snow: [handing him a joint] Only one thing to do.
Aaron Green: [taking a hit] Uh, guys? What is this stuff? My heart’s going really fast.
Aldous Snow: Oh, it’s a bit of this, a bit of that. It’s called a Jeffrey. It’s mostly weed, with a bit of opium as well… ground-up E’s… heroin… Clorox…
Aaron Green: I think I’m having a heart attack.”
Old School (2003)
Starring: Vince Vaughan, Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson
Would I have wanted to be there?: If I got to see Frank the Tank, then definitely
“Frank: [after funneling a beer] Fill it up again! Fill it up again! Once it hits your lips, it’s so good!“
Post tournament ball
A Knight’s Tale (2001)
Starring: Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon, Paul Bettany
Would I have wanted to be there?: Totally for the cool dancing and the Bowie
“Jocelyn: Sir Ulrick. What are you wearing to the ball tonight?
William: Er… nothing…
Jocelyn: Well, we shall cause a sensation, for I’ll dress to match.
William: [annoyed] Don’t you ever get tired of putting on clothes?
Chaucer: [whispers] I believe she was talking about taking them off, sir.
Jocelyn: A flower is only as good as its petals. Don’t you think?
William: A flower is good for nothing. You can’t eat a flower, a flower can’t keep your warm…
Jocelyn: And a rose never knocked a man off a horse either, did it?
William: You’re just a silly girl aren’t you.
Jocelyn: Better a silly girl with a flower, than a silly boy with a horse and a stick…
[she walks away]
Wat: It’s called a lance. Heellooo?“
Starring: Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff, Kris Kristofferson
Would I have wanted to be there: And get eaten alive? Er… no.
“Blade: You see the valets over there? They’re vampires. So’s the doorman… and the whore on the corner.
Dr. Karen Jenson: How can you tell?
Blade: By the way they move. The way they smell.“
American Pie (1999)
Starring: Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan
Would I have wanted to be there?: I feel like I already have… many times
“Steve Stifler: You actually said that?
Chris “Oz” Ostreicher: Shut up!
Jim: You did better than me Nova.
Chris “Oz” Ostreicher: Don’t call me that any more. I’m a fraud.
Steve Stifler: You guys are pathetic. I’m gonna find myself a little hottie.
Steve Stifler: *suck me beautiful!*
[walks off, laughing] “
