Film Friday #148

Drop Dead Gorgeous

This mockumentary follows the Miss Teen American Princess Pageant as the preliminaries are held in the small Minnesota town of Mount Rose. The main contenders are trailer-trash funeral attendant, Amber Atkins (Kirsten Dunst) and Becky Leeman (Denise Richards), daughter of the sponsor and a fanatically ambitious former winner (Kirstie Alley). As the cameras follow the hopefuls around, contestants start not only to face sabotage but also to die. This teen comedy has a heart as black as tar, satirising traditional “American” values around religion, guns, small town living and making your way to the top no matter what. It’s not particularly subtle but it is really funny. Worth a watch just for Becky’s heartfelt love song to Jeebus. 3.5/5

The Three Musketeers (2011)

This extremely wonky and largely unnecessary adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ novel features Logan Lerman as young musketeer wannabe, D’Artagnan and Luke Evans, Matthew McFayden and Ray Stevenson as musketeers, Aramis, Athos and Porthos. It also features dirigibles(??) What else can I say? It does kind of follow one of the plots of the novel but removes all of its teeth… because really the musketeers were pretty dodgy characters. Not even Christoph Waltz as Cardinal Richelieu can save it. Just avoid. 1/5

Safety Not Guaranteed

When journalist, Jeff (Jake Johnson) comes up with the idea of following up a newspaper placed by a man seeking a companion time for time travel, disillusioned intern, Darius (Aubrey Plaza) volunteers to join him. With fellow intern, Arnau (Karan Soni) in tow, they head to the coastal town where the ad was placed to try and find the apparent time traveller. Here they encounter paranoid oddball, Kenneth (Mark Duplass) and realise he is absolutely convinced he can travel back in time with the right equipment. They decide Darius is their best bet for getting close to him but it’s not long before she starts to feel strangely drawn to Kenneth. At the same time it comes to light that Jeff has set the whole thing up in order to try and find out what happened to his high school girlfriend, Liz (Jenica Bergere). I found this unusual love story absolutely charming and also very amusing in places. It could have gone multiple ways, including a very dark option but the ending is ultimately quite lovely. 4/5

I’m so excited

On a flight to Mexico City it becomes apparent that the landing gear is not fully functional. To ease the stress of the situation feisty air stewards, Joserra (Javier Cámara), Fajas (Carlos Areces) and Ulloa (Raúl Arévalo) drug the economy passengers and stewardesses and take to drink, along with the pilots (Hugo Silva and Antonio de la Torre). Now with only the first class passengers – including a famous dominatrix (Cecilia Roth), a soap actor (Guillermo Toledo) and virgin who claims to be able to sense death (Lola Dueñas) – to entertain, a series of coincidences will change all their lives forever. I’m so excited is outrageously frothy and filthy and a lot of fun but certainly not Almodovar’s best. 3/5

I think you’d really like it. It’s very dark but very funny.

  3. Great mini-reviews! Agree on Los Amantes Pasajeros. It’s fun but nowhere near Pedro’s best!

Thanks. I feel like he was having fun with it but it didn’t have the same soul as some of his earlier films.

  4. Great post, it’s been ages since I last sae Drop Dead Goregeous.
