My top 10 movie characters

I enjoyed doing last week’s top 10 so much, that I thought I might do a few more. So this time it’s my favourite movie characters… the ones I laughed at, was intrigued by, fell in love with and couldn’t take my eyes off.

Film: Everything is Illuminated (2005)
Played by: Boris Leskin
Quote: Grandfather actually says very little himself, but this quote from Alex kind of sums him up
“This is Sammy Davis Jr. Jr… She is Grandfather’s Seeing Eye bitch. Father purchased her for him not because he believes Grandfather is blind, but because a Seeing Eye bitch is also a good thing for people who pine for the opposite of loneliness. In truth, Father did not purchase her at all, but merely retrieved her from the home for forgetful dogs. Because of this, she is not a real Seeing Eye bitch, and is also mentally deranged.”

Film: Warm Bodies (2013)
Played by: Nicholas Hoult
Quote: ”I don’t wanna be this way. I’m lonely. I’m totally lost. I mean, I’m literally lost. I’ve never been in this part of the airport before.”

Film: Lawless (2012)
Played by: Tom Hardy
Quote: “I thought I walked.”

holly-golightly1Holly Golightly
Film: Breakfast at Tiffanys (1961)
Played by: Audrey Hepburn
Quote: “The blues are because you’re getting fat and maybe it’s been raining too long, you’re just sad that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?”

Film: Despicable Me 1 & 2 (2010 & 2013)
Voiced by: Mostly Pierre Coffin
Quote: “Banana!”

kill-bill-uma-thurman-whysobluThe Bride
Film: Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2 (2003 & 2004)
Played by: Uma Thurman
Quote: “Those of you lucky enough to have your lives, take them with you. However, leave the limbs you’ve lost. They belong to me now. Except you, Sofie! You stay right where you are!”

Patrick VeronaPatrick Verona
Film: 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Quote: “What is it with this chick, she have beer flavored nipples?”

tyler-durdenTyler Durden
Film: Fight Club (1999)
Played by: Brad Pitt

draven5Eric Draven
Film: The Crow (1994)

MissCongeniality10Gracie Lou Freebush/Gracie Hart
Film: Miss Congeniality (2000)
Played by: Sandra Bullock
Quote: “I am in a dress, I have gel in my hair, I haven’t slept all night, I’m starved, and I’m armed! Don’t mess with me!”

  1. Other than Sandra Bullock, I love your pics. 🙂

    1. Abbi

Whaddaya talking about? Sandy B rocks!

      1. Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. You’re going to do more lists?? Yay. 🙂

Great list. I agree with The Bride & the Minions for sure. And Eric Draven & Tyler Durden. Bullock gets on my nerves a bit, though. 😉 Only ones I’ve not seen are Lawless & Everything is Illuminated.

    1. Abbi

I am just working on the topics!

Surprisingly I love Sandy B… and Miss Congeniality. It’s one of my weird guilty pleasures.

I would very much recommend both Lawless and Everything is Illuminated (which is my favourite film of all time).

      1. I’ll try to check them out! Someday! Man I have a long “to see” list…

        1. Abbi

I hear you. Mine has gotten ludicrous!

  3. Some interesting and varied choices. I’d love to know the reasons behind these making your top ten.

    1. Abbi

I was going to write an explanation for each one but then I realised it was sometimes hard to pin down exactly and without writing a long preamble about the film… but since you asked so nicely, here is the abridged version:

Grandfather – he’s the quintessential grumpy old man and his refusal to accept anything that doesn’t fit into his world view is just so funny. But then this is balanced so well with his love for Sammy Davis Jnr Jnr and his touching encounter with Lista. And the end of his story is hauntingly beautiful.

R – I am a little bit in love with R. His complete transformation through the power of loving and being loved in return along with his self-effacing wit are wonderful to watch.

Forrest Bondurant – Forrest takes no shit from anybody. He also doesn’t say very much but what he does say is so profound… and often unintentionally hilarious. He manages to be both very strong and incredibly vulnerable in one package.

Holly Golightly – There are obviously issues with Holly as a character because she is essentially a manipulative prostitute but her effortless, radiant elegance and relentless optimism (whether faked or not) just makes her hard to tear your eyes off. You fall in love with her just as easily as her “patrons” do.

Minions – Quite simply they make me laugh more than pretty much anything else.

The Bride – She is a chick who kicks ASS, plus I love a tale of vengeance and watching someone dishing it out with such relish.

Patrick Verona – He’s the bad boy of every girl’s teenage dreams. Dangerous with a sensitive, broken centre… just waiting for the right girl to fix him. *Swoon*.

Tyler Durden – I think it’s his absolute and constant inappropriateness, which actually translates to him saying exactly what everyone is thinking. He is on the absolute edge, which is something I find quite alluring to watch without having to experience myself. Plus he’s just so fucking COOL.

Eric Draven – It’s the vengeance thing again. Also he’s dark and tortured but also vulnerable and sensitive and again on the very edge, like he might snap at any minute. When I was 16 I wanted to be him.

Gracie Hart – Miss Congeniality is a very silly film but watching Gracie’s transformation and her ability to evolve and also shake up every situation she’s in is so much fun. I guess I kind of relate to trying to be elegant but essentially ending up being goofy no matter what I do.

So there you go. Definitely some recurring themes with the kind of characters that appeal to me.

  4. Some excellent choices here.

  5. This makes me want to rewatch all of those movies again. I adore R!!!

    1. Abbi

I think it might have been something like that. It was pretty old though. My new one arrived on Friday though so I am a happy bunny!

    2. Abbi

I don’t know what it is about R but I fell utterly in love with him both times I saw Warm Bodies in the cinema. Can’t wait to see it again!
